A Farewell

Good morning, Starlings.

There isn’t going to be a proper blog post this week. Last week I learnt that Chair of Renaissance Press suddenly passed away. To say it was unexpected is to understate the case. I’m still processing, so I’ll leave it here.

I don’t think I’ll be able to put a farewell any better than Renaissance Press did when they announced the news, so I’ll leave it in full here:

Dear Renaissance family,

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we are informing you of the passing of our beloved Chair of the Board, April Laramey, who passed away earlier this week. We do not have much information at this time, and an obituary is not yet available; we only found out after her passing was announced through the Treasury Board of Canada, as well as trough posts by some family members on her Facebook profile. Our whole hearts go out in support for April’s family, and the many, many people who loved her as we did.

April was an incredible artist, an excellent wordsmith, and a dedicated activist who used her amazing voice to defend and uplift all marginalized humans. For all of us here at Renaissance, words are inadequate to the burden of our grief; to say that the world is diminished by this incredible loss doesn’t even begin to cover it.

As you may know, April filled a crucial and pivotal role here at Renaissance. We kindly ask for gentleness and patience while our team recovers and we find our bearings through this difficult time.

In the meantime, we leave you with this beautiful piece of art made by April, featuring her favourite quote from one of her favourite shows, which we hope will bring you comfort.

Slán go foill.
