Hey, have you ever read a review and just thought, "What are you talking about?" Yeah... I read a particularly unhelpful review of a book I was interested in picking up and it honestly just left me scratching my head.
I don't personally tend to pick a book based upon the reviews, but I do read reviews of books I'm interested in to get an idea of what to expect. Most reviews are helpful enough ("Starts a little slow, but keep reading, it's worth it" or "Promising beginning, but the rest of the book falls flat," for example). I don't base my purchase decisions on these reviews, but they are helpful... usually. And then there are some that are not ("Bad" or "I don't get it," for example). They don't have to be good or lengthy reviews to be helpful.
As a reader, unhelpful reviews are a personal pet peeve.
Moving on!
Some bragging to be done... not for me, but a friend of mine. Leonie Dawson is a wonderful human being and a soul-centred business goddess who has been doing extremely well for herself without compromising her values and ideals. Now, she's a cover girl. For Business Heroine magazine. And she gave a fabulous interview. Listen to it here:
I'm so very proud of her and so thrilled there is someone as wonderful and bright as her in the world. She makes me smile. You can find out more about her here.
Last but certainly not least, a reminder that amazing science fiction publisher Bundoran Press is running an Indiegogo campaign for their next anthology Lazarus Risen. Guys, they're really good. I'm not just saying this. I'm not a brown-nosing author that wants to be published. I mean, I want to be published, but I'm not saying nice things just to reach that goal. They're genuinely really good. I have such profound respect for Hayden Trenholm and what he's been doing with this small press here in Ottawa.
Have a look at the campgain here and give if you can. It would warm the cockles of my cold, dead heart to see writer's paid what they're worth.
Plus there are a tonne of really cool perks.
That's all for me. I have a book cover to find/paint/commission. Have a fabulous day, everyone!
Ciao!
