Gàrradh nan Leannan

Picture
The hare: the symbol of the goddess Andraste, followed by the British war-queen Boudicca.

What is it?

Gàrradh nan Leannan means "The Garden of the Lovers" in Scottish Gaelic and is a grove planted in the Caledonian nature preserve at Dundreggan, near Loch Ness as part of a re-wilding project. The objective is to restore the Caledonian forest, which once covered most of the Scottish Highlands.

Author S.M. Carrière founded the grove through treesforlife.org.uk in honour of the two heroes of her novel Daughters of Britain. The ancient Caledonian forest - which is not fiction, but was fact - provides a backdrop to much of their story.

How does it work?

50 % of all royalties from the sales of Daughters of Britain will go toward the purchasing of trees to populate this grove. There is also an option for those who wish to contribute to the grove without purchasing the book. Simply go to the grove's own website here, and purchase a tree to plant in the grove. It will automatically be counted towards the numbers of trees in the grove, and will be planted during one of two plating seasons a year, depending on when the tree was purchased.

These trees will never be harvested, and will, once the grove is mature enough, be left to mature naturally, restoring the ancient Caledonian forest for future generations to enjoy.
