Your Very Own Adventure Project
On the first of February, 2013, S.M. Carrière was looking for a way to both interact with her readers more and find a means of giving back to the city that had become her home. She decided to do both in one fell swoop. Perhaps fell is not the best word to use in this instance.
The project took much long than she had expected. Anticipating one year from start to finish, S.M. Carrière found the story still going after almost two years. On DATE the story finally reached its conclusion with the help of brave readers who stuck through it all. It may have taken forever, but the story is at last complete and has been edited and is available in all eBook formats HERE.
All proceeds from the sale of this eBook will go to the wonderful folks at The Caring and Sharing Exchange Ottawa in an effort to make the lives of school-aged children a little bit brighter.
Below is a companion to the eBook, detailing the options the readers had to choose from, how the readers voted (marked in brackets after each choice) and even the bits of story that didn't make it into the final product; like the times when the readers voted poorly and ended up killing the character. It might give some insight into readership behaviour, and also why this project took such a long time to complete.
Enjoy!

Poor Decision Interlude
You look down the left path and then the central path. Your gaze moves between them as you chew your bottom lip. You don't even consider the right path. Though it doesn't look any more or less sinister than the other paths, for some reason, you decide that it's not worth even considering.
So you sit on Fas and stare mutely between the left path and the central path.
As you sit, it slowly dawns on you that your foolish indecision is of little consequence. Wandering into the wild alone, in a world you know nothing about, with no fighting, hunting or tracking skills to speak of, was not the most intelligent decision you have ever made.
You come to realise that no matter which path you choose, you are going to end up dead.
That's right! You're dead. It doesn't matter which way you go... you're dead. Would you like to know the various ways you died? I can tell you. I will tell you.
If you had chosen a) The left path, you would have been immediately attacked by the Seeker's Son. The phantom crests the hills behind you and gives chase. Poor Fas isn't what she used to be, and she simply can out run the spectre. It gets her first. She sqeals in pain as the Seeker's Son slowly absorbs her into itself. You're thrown as she stumbles and collapses, breaking your ankle. You try to stumble away, but it's not very long before the Seeker's Son gets you too. All you can see as you feel the flesh melt from you is Fas' blanched bones.
You killed Fas, you brute.
Had you instead gone for b) The centre path, you would have been attacked by bandits. That's right. Bandits tried to rob you. They surprised you when you were but a day away from the Ranger Headquarters. Of course, you had nothing of value and so they slit your throat open. It's not all terrible, really. As you lie dying in a pool of your own blood, the Seeker's Son shows up and attacks the bandits. You die before it reaches you, listening to the sweet sound of the bandits screaming as the evil ghoul absorbs them.
Fas gets away.
I'm not even going to bother with what happens if you had instead chosen c) The right path. I assure you, that death is pathetic and lonely.
The point is, you die.
I mean really? What were you thinking, heading out into the wilds by yourself? You know you're not a great tracker, hunter, or warrior. You can't even remember your own name!
Twit.
Would you like to try again? A do-over? I can do that, you know. I'm talented that way. If the answer is 'No.' then don't bother doing anything about your self-inflicted and untimely demise. The story ends here.
If, however, the answer is an emphatic 'Yes, please. Let's do this thing over again.' then click HERE to go back to the episode where you messed up to vote again. You will see a comment from yours truly which reads:
"DO OVER! Leave your new set of votes below this comment to try again."
Hit the reply button and vote again. Vote wisely this time.
I'll give you a hint: IT'S NOT a).
Honestly...

Poor Decision Interlude
You chose to go north and attempt to cross at the falls. After just over a week of travel, you realise that it would have only taken a few days to restore the bridge across the ravine. Cutting and shaping the wood would have taken most of it and the actual building would not have taken more than a day. And then other groups of Rangers would have a safe, quiet place to cross.
Not two steps into the frigid, rushing waters of the river, you regret your decision. The ferry in the south might well have raised some interest, but it's not like the Rangers couldn't get out their identifying armour and pretend to be humble woodsmen for the crossing.
Regret and reason do not save you. Martel was not wrong when he said that the current was strong and the rocks were slippery. First in the crossing, you inched your way across. A third of the way across, a sharp stone; a sharp stone that happened to be very slippery. Your involuntary spasm of pain gives the current the opportunity it was pushing for.
It sweeps your legs out from under you, the freezing water knocking the air violently from your lungs. The gurguling water covers your head. You can vaguely hear shouting as you feel yourself torn at tremendous speed down river. The water spits you out over the falls. You take an instinctual, gasping breath as you head gets clear of the water, but the rapidly approaching jagged rocks at the bottom of the falls indicate to you that such a thing was futile.
Your last thought before your head is dashed upon the rocks below is that you hope Martel makes it across alright....
Well, what did you expect? You're not invincible, you know! At least you didn't kill Fas this time, you brute.
Would you like another do-over? I can do that. I'm the narrator.
Yes? Well, if you would like to do the do-over, click HERE to reread the last bit and decide again. Leave your vote beneath the marker I will leave in the comments there. But do use your heads when making decisions, you bunch of lemmings!
I'll give you a hint. It's not option a).
