My rating: 5 of 5 stars
*Full disclosure: I know the author. We're friends, and published by the same small press.*
I'm part of Evan's writer's circle, and I have long admired the manner in which Evan uses language. His prose while reading is always really well done; pleasant to the ear and trusting in the reader's intelligence. This book is no different. The prose is fantastic.
The characters are also fantastic, and I have a particular soft spot for the protagonist's professor, whose dry wit had me giggling often. He was genuinely one of the most delightful characters I've read in a long time.
As for story, I'm not really one who is much for modern settings, but this story was so good, and so intriguing and so delightfully written, that the usually off-putting setting had zero effect on how much I enjoyed it. Also, it's quite a delight to read about a city you are currently living in, even if it makes the city far more sinister than you'd like!
Also, you can quite tell Evan's familiarity with university life and academic interests in this. They are close enough to my own that I enjoyed that flavour to the story immensely.
Definitely one I'm really happy to have bought.
