To be clear, I in no way intend to commit any crimes over this nonsense. I still appreciate my friends being there for me, though.
Anyway, along with one of those messages, someone sent me a song. Thanks, Jim! It's a fucking brilliant song, and I've been listening to it on repeat for... well, since I first heard it yesterday afternoon. It is one of many covers I've heard that slows the original, makes it slightly creepier or melancholic (think Paint it Black by Ciara, Sound of Silence by Disturbed, and Lorde's version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World).
The thing with this song is that the opening is exceptionally epic, with sound designs that immediately bring to mind a sweeping science fiction narrative. The lyrics and the style of the music immediately brought me to Skylark, the only science fiction I've written to date.
I think in visuals. I imagine in visuals. Immediately, a trailer for the film adaptation jumped into my head to this music (in parts, obviously. No one wants to watch a seven minute trailer). Of course, because my brain can't shut the hell up, I've got a whole thing about a film adaptation of Skylark going on in my head.
As I haven't anything else to note to talk about today, I figured I'd share it with you. But first, you must listen to the song. Here it is:
The second film would begin with the realization that the story hasn't ended. It is, however, a devastating uphill fight for our hero. In this second part, in the book, he gives a short speech which both instills hope for those in his crew, and threatens the fuckers who put them all in this situation. I hear that speech in my head, with the epic opening of this song swelling and dimming behind the words. Then there's a big, big reveal, and the lyrics from the end of this song.
I won't back down
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
I won't back down
Hey, I will stand my ground and I won't back down
No, I won't back down
No, I won't back down
Title.
Release date.
End of trailer.
And that's what my brain is doing with this song. Now I've been listening to it a lot, so I have been thinking about it a lot. A film adaptation of Skylark is likely never to happen. But I really do feel that it would make a great movie (actually two, according to my over-active imagination).
Especially in this climate.
The hero goes against orders. He turns rogue. Because he knows what is right. And because he does, and because his unit follows, he ends up saving the world and the two apex species who now call it home. A story about heroes who are heroes because they turned against their superiors to do the right thing, the just thing, might just be the thing we need to see/read.
Anyway, I'm not trying to turn this into a giant advertisement for Skylark, it's just that this song... this song is so fucking perfect for the mood and major theme of the book, and my brain will not let it go. I have to go, but before I do, the lyrics in full (from musixmatch):
Well, I won't back down
No, I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down
Gonna stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down
I won't back down
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
I won't back down
Hey, I will stand my ground and I won't back down
Well, I know what's right
I've got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down
I won't back down
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
I won't back down
Hey, I will stand my ground and I won't back down
I won't back down
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
I won't back down
Hey, I will stand my ground and I won't back down
